Blogging Success for 2012

We are now well into 2012, the Christmas music has stopped playing; the Christmas tree is a distant memory; we have already broken our new year’s resolutions, and the stores are now selling Easter eggs.

One thing that I wish for all of you this year is huge success with your blogs. I truly believe that success is much less of a science than many would make you believe, and I am confident that whatever your blogging goals are for this year, you can most certainly reach them!

Here are some thoughts that I have about being successful this year with your blog:

Define Success

Every one of us are going to have different goals this year when it comes to our blogs. For some, it will simply be about increasing the number of readers we have.  For others, it might be to make a few extra dollars every month to treat ourselves with, and for others it could be the more serious goal of earning a full time income from our blogs by the end of the year.

Let’s not go at this year blind and confused.  Whether you blog for fun, profit or both, define success for your blog this year. Write it down and reflect upon it. This will give you something to work towards and might help you make some important decisions when certain situations arise surrounding your blog throughout the year.

Be Consistent

Do what you do and do it consistently. Anyone is capable of creating awesome content that they are passionate about, but most people haven’t got the self control and organizational skills to put that content out consistently. This is such an important factor when it comes to the success of your blog.

Be realistic about how often you can put out a quality blog post and stick to that posting schedule. Then everyone knows what to expect. If you are sloppy and posting 10 posts one week and none the next, readers won’t feel secure and may not stick around. You need to build a brand that people can rely on and feel secure associating with.

Engage With Your Community

Don’t just see replying to a couple of comments on your blog as quality engagement with your community. Make an effort to interact with the people who make your blog what it is, and who are going to continue to make your blog a success. Tweet with them, hangout with them on Google+ from time to time, seek them out! Guest post on their blogs, offer them the opportunity to guest post on yours. Build valuable relations.

Don’t Give Up

Though this may sound like a huge generalization, I do believe that the main reason that a few win and most fall by the waste side is that most give up.

Building a successful blog isn’t always easy, and there will be times you will feel like giving up. Whether through lack of readers, lack of inspiration, or lack of income, don’t give up. The winners never give up, even when it feels rough.

I wish all of you the best with your blogs this year. It is going to be an exciting year for those who are ready to take up the challenge and “keep on keeping on”.

Here at Blogging Your Way we want to do everything we can to help you have success with your blog in 2012. Therefore I want to leave you with one question at the end of this post:

What topics can we cover here at Blogging Your Way this year to support you in your blogging efforts?

Great post. One thing I heard Ina Garten (The Barefood Contessa) say, is to ask yourself what you liked to do when you were 10 years old? That’s back when you were just starting to become who you are, and before lots of the pressures of life.

I’ve heard that before too, and I think it’s a fun way to remember what gets
      you excited!

These are some great questions to get you thinking Sherri! I know one that hits home for me is what would you do, even if you never made any money doing it. That’s not to say we should always work for free, but it means we love it enough to do so. And you know what, even if someone says, I’d like to be able to go to the beach every day, if they wanted it bad enough, they could create something that would allow that!
    Thanks for making us think!

Great point, Bernice!! I’m thankful that THIS is what I’d do, even if I
couldn’t earn a living doing it!

    Hi Sherri!

I like this post. It isn’t pushy but it leads you in the right direction. :)

I also especially like your suggestion on trying to develop our ‘other sides’. I’ve been brought up in a science based family and I thoroughly enjoy learning science. However, after a short stint in a research lab, I decided it wasn’t enough to sustain me for the rest of my life. Now I’m dipping my toes into my more creative side. :)

Thanks for sharing this post on twitter.

What a great illustration. We might be good at something and enjoy it, but
it still might not be our passion. For me, working with children is this
way. I thought I wanted to work with children and started out studying early
childhood development, but I realized I’m much more passionate about
business administration and marketing and changed my major. I still love
children, but I think I would get burned out too quickly in that profession!

    Hey Sherri,
Thanks for the great article — not only do you talk about the problem, but offer solutions! I’m going through this right now, realized I needed to find another direction (coming home crying every day from my job was a pretty good indicator), but have no idea what my passion is. I have been volunteering 1-2 times most weeks for months now trying to figure it out. I HIGHLY recommend volunteering to others, especially if you can find opportunities that don’t require a repeat commitment, so you can try different things. Besides all the help you can bring to others (which is not marginal, but is not really the topic here), volunteering can expose you to people, places, and things that you may not have had a chance to encounter. I have found things I like and things I don’t, things I’m good at and things I am not — but, most importantly, I have learned so much about myself! I’m still not entirely certain what my passion is, but I am enjoying what I am doing in the mean time so much that I felt compelled to share. (I also recommend volunteering if there’s something you enjoy but you know it’s not your passion, like another reader who mentioned working with kids. You can choose if/when you want to do a kid-related volunteer project without letting yourself get burned out.)

This is such a beautiful way to discover your passion. Thank you so much for
      sharing it here!

Blogging would be really boring and lonely if it weren’t for the interaction with the readers!  That’s the best part about it!!!  Just like in real life, it takes awhile to develop strong healthy relationships.

I’m still working in Blogger and haven’t made the jump to WordPress yet.  Do you have any suggestions of how best to respond to comments in the Blogger platform?  I find it a little challenging, yet can’t rationalize making the move to WordPress until the blog revenue can cover the costs.

Unfortunately, it’s been several years since I’ve used Blogger; hopefully someone else will chime in with some ideas for you!

I’ve made a rule for myself this year: I don’t blog until I have the time to sit down, post, respond to reader comments, and then read things that pique my interest (like this one!) in my blog feed. I’ve definitely seen increased reader interaction and am enjoying blogging much more! :-)

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

      I like it! Good rule!

I love how you said, “Building a successful blog isn’t always easy, and there will be times you will feel like giving up. Whether through lack of readers, lack of inspiration, or lack of income, don’t give up. The winners never give up, even when it feels rough. I really needed that inspiration! I just started blogging 51 days ago (who’s counting?!), and my goal is to blog about a pinterest project that I will complete each and every day, for 365 days (check it out at: http://ipinterest.wordpress.com ). So far it has been going really great, but some days I really need the motivation, so thank you! From December 1st, 2011- November 30th, 2012, I will choose anything on pinterest which peaks my interest.I will either be posting via blogs, videos, Facebook, or twitter, and will most likely be following this challenge:Monday: outdoors we will go/get craftyTuesday: fashionable kiddo/crafty kiddoWednesday: cooking it upThursday: organizational chaosFriday: fashionable mommaSaturday: crafty creationSunday: baking awayWhether I have 1 follower or many, I am doing this to learn a few things! As of now, I am not so good at cooking or crafting, can piece together an outfit at times, and usually know what I like. I hope that in doing this I will be stretched in my creativity, have fun while doing it, and show my two girls that it is never to late to learn or try something new!God Bless my husband and family while I do this, I’m sure there will be many times when I (or they) will want to throw in the towel!
