Does Your Blog Have Clear Direction?

Hey guys! I hope that your blogging efforts are going well and being extremely fruitful.

Here in the sunny south-west of the UK spring has very much leaped into action! In fact, you could probably mistake it for summer down here at the moment, it is beautiful! As the seasons are changing, I am thinking about seasons in my life and what this next season will bring. Direction is something big on the agenda.

One of the key mistakes I made when I first starting blogging, and indeed, for the first few years of my blogging career was not having clear enough direction for my blogs. I thought that I could build an audience and eventually make money from a personal blog which covered my sometimes weird and extremely eclectic interests! What it took me a while to realize was this this was never going to work. I think that the only kind of person this is going to work for is someone who is extremely famous and therefore there is a lot of personal interest.

The simple fact of the matter is this:

If the direction of your blog is not crystal clear then you won’t get regular readers apart from your mum and a few of your friends.

I know that sounds kind of harsh, but it is so true! You just can’t fit fishing, tea, web design and social media in to one blog and make a success of it. It’s about focusing on a niche and going with it! If you have a-gazillion categories and tags then something needs to change – it’s time to streamline.

Whether you are reading this and think you have got it sussed or not, why not take some time in the next couple of days to consider how things are going with your blog and the direction it is taking. Is it clear to your readers what you write about? Is your topic very niche and specific? Do you readers know what they can expect every time they browse to your website?

Take some time to think about these things and make changes. Maybe you need to cut some categories and get more specific about others? Maybe you need to split your blog into two separate blogs?

As always, if you have questions and want advice, feel free to ask in the comments below!

How is the direction of your blog? What changes do you need to make? Let us know in the comments below!

Thank you! my hubby knows a couple of these and it always frustrates me watching him use them and knowing that I can’t remember them the next time I want to do it… I’m printing this out to keep next to my laptop!

Glad to help! I don’t think it will take long before you have them memorized
      once you start using them!

This is something I’ve spent a lot of time developing lately. Having an editorial calendar and a good post calendar plug in with wordpress has been very helpful to me.  I was at blogger for a long time and I’m blogging about digital scrapbooking on my site at http://christinesmith.net

Well done Christine! Sounds great! :)

My husband is a die-hard keyboard shortcut lover/user and it frustrates him that I know/use so little. I just printed this chart; perhaps I can learn them and save myself some time {and him some frustration}. Thanks!

I hope it helps you — they’re kind of addictive once you start using them!

I’ve been quietly reading (and appreciating) your tips here for a while now. I have known this tip from the beginning since I read a lot about blogging before actually starting one. BUT, here’s the thing. I see lots of successful homemaking blogs that blog about all sorts of things, (tea included) Would a homemaking blog be considered a type of umbrella niche that covers all sorts of other topics?

The other question I had is, did you start separate blogs for your different interests? If so, how does one do that successfully? It would seem to take a lot more time than just one.

Thank you so much for all your tips. I look forward to hearing from you as these two questions have been on my mind for some time!

Hey Michelle! Thanks for the encouragement and great questions!

Firstly, to me, I think that a homemaking blog is a great topic, as, even though you can cover a broad range of things it is still quite a specific niche.

Juggling multiple blogs is a very tricky business and I have tried and failed many times. I think it really depends where you want to go with things. For me right now, I have decided to take one topic (and blog) at a time. When that blog gets large enough I will bring on other people to help run it, and then move on to my next topic. This, however, may not work for everyone if it isn’t the direction you want to go in.

I think you need to take a look at the reasons why you want to blog, what is the end goal? Is it for satisfaction, to make money, to share knowledge?

Perhaps reply with some thoughts and we can talk further! :)
