Writing can often be hard. Those who don’t write always assume those who do have ideas flowing from their minds like an endless stream and everything comes so easily.
If only that were the case.
So, what is there to do? What happens when we sit in front our monitors with our hands over our keyboards and nothing happens?
How do we get inspired to start writing again? Here are several ways to get refreshed and inspired to write again.
Go and enjoy another art form.
Instead of concerning yourself about what to write, go look at some photography or oil paintings. Listen to some great music. If you have any artistic skills beyond writing, do it. Take that sketchbook out. Break out the canvas and the oil paints. Go to a museum or an art gallery.
Take a nap.
Don’t laugh. Taking a 20-30 minute nap can be very invigorating. We used to believe naps were only for babies or toddlers, but there are enough studies out there to show that a short nap can restore energy. Just don’t sleep too long. Doing so can have the opposite effect. If you’re stuck and have the opportunity, go ahead and snooze for awhile.
Go out somewhere.
Go have some coffee or a cup of tea somewhere. Take in a movie. Take a nice long walk on the beach or at a local park. Do something to get yourself away from the desk and even away from your house or flat just to clear your head. Doing so will allow you to re-focus when you get back.
Indulge yourself.
That’s right go ahead and have that chocolate fudge sundae you normally wouldn’t eat. That box of chocolates sitting in the closet? Break it open. Enjoy it. Of course after doing so you may want to return to number 3 and take that walk as well!
Write something else.
Writing a novel? Do a short story instead. Writing fiction? Write some non-fiction commentary.
Try writing with a different medium.
Meaning, if you’re always writing on your computer, see what it feels like again to put pen to paper. You’d be surprised what can happen when you do something as simple as that.
Whatever you choose to do, do something instead of sitting there, making yourself crazy as you fight to get writing again. Stepping away from the computer and doing something different will likely get the creative juices flowing again, and you will quickly find yourself writing again in no time.
