How to Free Yourself with a No-Do List

We all have our daily, weekly, and monthly to-do lists. But what about a No-Do List?

What’s that? Well, quite simply a no-do list is a list of activities that you resolve NOT to do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. It is a list of things that have a negative impact on your life, time, and relationships.

A No-Do List is Personal and Subjective:

Your to-do list is probably very different from your partner’s or colleague’s. Similarly, a no-do list is also different, personal, and subjective. What you may consider a time-waster, someone else may consider recreational. So, create your no-do list based on what’s important (or not important) for you and your family.

A No-Do List is Not Negative:

Having a no-do list does not mean you are a negative person. In fact, you’re being quite positive. Positive about reclaiming lost time, positive about doing more with your life, and positive about saying “yes” to things that matter.

A No-Do List is a Habit-Breaker:

Let’s face it, we all have our little time wasters. And there’s nothing wrong with that…if you want to waste time. However, if you wish you had more time to pursue what you love, then you need to break your habits. A no-do list will help you do that!

Here are four items that might be part of your no-do list:

1. Watching Re-Runs:

I’m not against watching television. In fact, I often enjoy an episode of Castle or Psych. However, I don’t recommend watching TV re-runs.

To be fair, I’ve done my share of re-run watching. However, when I realized I was wasting 30 minutes watching something I’d already seen instead of reading, baking, blogging, etc. I stopped and put it on my no-do list.

If you are spending wasted time in front of the television, consider putting it your no-do list and instead, tackle something on your to-do list.

2. Wasting Time Online:

Have you ever sat down to write an email and still been there thirty minutes later? Not because you didn’t know what to write, but because you got distracted by Facebook, Twitter, an interesting blog posts (like this one!), or just chatting with a friend who happened to be online.

Again, as someone who loves Twitter and reading blogs, I understand. Trust me, I’ve been there more than once! This is on my no-do list because tweeting, browsing, and chatting are surefire ways to get less done – especially when I should actually be working.

3. Saying Yes…to Everything:

Will you volunteer at the school bake sale this Friday? Sure.

Will you stay late at work this week? No problem.

Will you visit extended family over the weekend? Absolutely.

These aren’t separate instances. This is one person in one week. Add all this extra stuff to the regular activities a mom has to do and boom! Super-stressed soul.

Saying yes to everything and everyone is easy but it puts you, your life, and your family in a really tight spot. Now imagine, if you said “no” to two of those activities. Put this on your no-do list and see how it liberates you.

4. Pursuing Perfection:

As a closet perfectionist who arranged her glassware according to size, type, and use, this was the toughest no-do list item for me. I had to consciously remind myself that it’s alright if my plates aren’t stacked according to color, and that the world wouldn’t come to an end if my spice rack wasn’t alphabetized.

Pursuing perfection is awesome when it enhances who you are but when it ends up draining the life out of you and your relationships, it’s time to step back and rethink.

These time-wasters are just some of MY no-dos. What might YOURS be?

This is something I have never thought about. A No-Do List. I love it – thanks for sharing!

    This is great!

  • Marianne

Totally a “Now-Why-Didn’t-I-Think-Of-That?!” moment for me…this is absolutely brilliant – like, seemingly simply common-sensible…but at least for me, I get SO caught up in my To-Do lists or in time-wasters to which I escape or with which I busy myself in order to put off things I’m better off actually doing…that this awesome No-Do List idea would just never have occurred to me…. So THANK YOU so much for sharing this!! Cheers!

Hoping to make this longer than my to-do list:)

Get the iNo app for the iphone to help with saying no! It gives you scripts on how to say no for any who, what, where, or how. I use it all the time! :)

It’s definitely a fun app! I only which there was a G-rated version because
my kids play on my iPad and some of the answers aren’t family friendly!

Hubby does ours every year with TaxAct. Very reasonable and straightforward, even if you itemize (which we do every year). It walks you through each deduction and asks questions to see what you qualify for.

    • Anonymous

I’ve used TaxAct a few times too, and I really like it as well. Last year,
oddly enough, I could NOT get it to play nicely on my new computer, so I
finally just switched to a different program!

I’ve done my own taxes since my first job. I have a strong preference for TurboTax which hasn’t let me down so far. I don’t itemize, so they’re pretty simple returns anyway. I sure hope I’ve never missed a deduction! People don’t realize how easy it really is to do your own taxes, and the only person you have to pay is yourself!

    • Anonymous

I think it helps when you start doing them early. I started when I was a
teenager too, and so as things have gotten a little more complicated, I’ve
only had to learn new things a little at a time!

  • Marissa

I laughed when I read this post as I’m having a problem with our taxes this year. Up until this year, I had always done my own taxes using either TurboTax or the H&R Block software. I got married in July and my husband insisted we go to H&R Block because that’s what he’s always done. So I gave in. We went on Saturday and I’m 99% sure that the guy made a mistake. I even told him when he was doing it that I thought he was mistaken and he gave me some drawn out reason why he wasn’t. So I just thought well I’ll go home and look it up online. And of course everything I’ve read is telling me I’m right. So I called H&R Block and they’re looking into it. I can already tell they’re going to try to get out of refunding me my money even though it says on their website that they guarantee their services or you get your money back. My husband has apologized however and said he will let me do them from now on.

Oh, what a mess, Marissa!! I hope you get it straightened out and get your
money back without too much trouble!

  • Kristy

Hubby does ours on Turbotax. We do itemize and it walks you through it. He’s a CPA though and I wouldn’t want to be the one doing it!

    • Anonymous

That’s always convenient, Kristy — although I know being married to a CPA
isn’t always easy this time of year!

  • Kate

I use turbotax. If you are a USAA member, go through the USAA site to get a discount. :)

    • Anonymous

      Gotta love USAA!

  • Karen

I’ve always done my own taxes. But then, I’m a CPA, I do it for a living. I haven’t missed a deduction on my own return, but I have amended many past years returns for clients to correct errors in reporting and for missed deductions.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

Do you have any guidelines for when someone should attempt them on their own versus hiring a professional?

  • http://mom2giqm.wordpress.com/ Anne-Marie

I’ve always done my own taxes…even Schedule C, C Corps, S Corps, etc. The first year I had to file a return, I had a coupon for one of the well known tax services to do my taxes for free (a $25 value at the time). I watched the woman do my taxes & I was like “This is TOO easy.” So, I’ve never had anyone else do my taxes. One big reason is liability. Who’s at fault if a return is filed wrong by someone else? Me. I simply don’t trust anyone else to have my BEST interests at heart. — As much as I hate paying taxes, I enjoy the returns. I even volunteered one year to prepare taxes for others. It was fun to see different tax situations. — While I’m not a CPA, I did take a tax prep course about 10 yrs ago to learn more about preparing my own business taxes. I got straight A’s. — And I do use Turbo Tax & another program (for business, Turbo Tax is too expensive for business) to help me make my forms tidy. So glad for E-file too!

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

I’d love to know what program you use for business taxes as I get ready to tackle mine.

  • Debbbie

Well, my hubby is a “tax professional”. He does taxes/business analysis services for farmers. (He is not a CPA but an “enrolled agent”.)
Actually before we married I did my very simple taxes. When we married he worked in a different area of agribusiness, and the group he now works for actually did our taxes because he farms part-time as well. But he always did our taxes by himself for “fun” to see how close he got. Needless to say when they advertised an opening the job was a perfect fit. He now does our taxes of course, He is usually finishing ours the 2nd week of April lol.

This time of year is definitely hard for the tax professional and family. My husband works 13+ hr days 6 days a week. (He does take most of Sunday off only working in the evening) But he truly enjoys his work and has a flexible schedule much of the rest of the yr. It is just too bad that my Bday is April 14th lol ;)

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

It sounds like you have a great attitude about it, and I bet that makes it easier on you and him during those months!

  • Musings of a Housewife

My husband does them with Turbotax. Ours are getting pretty complicated, with my business and all the different avenues of revenue (and possible deductions), and he has a side biz with a friend. So it’s getting kind of complex. I wish he’d hire someone to be sure we’re doing it right, but I guess I trust him, lol. We usually owe money nowadays, thanks to my biz. We will start filing quarterly in 2011.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

It will be even more fun once the new laws go into effect and we have to send 1099s to anybody and everybody that we pay money to!

  • Anonymous

I’ve done ours on my own for YEARS on TurboTax.com. Super easy and free! We always get money back so I’m happy!

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

That’s always a great feeling! I always end up having to pay. :(

  • Missy June

I’m a TaxAct fan myself. I have used their program online for approximately seven years now with no problem – even through addition of children and divorce.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

It’s always good to hear other people’s experiences — thanks for sharing yours!

  • http://christinashaw.com Anonymous

We use a CPA then file electronically with TaxAct ourselves…CPA is $70 and TaxAct is free. But it is worth it to us, he finds things we didn’t know about. Just went yesterday and discovered a credit for buying a car last year! =)

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

Does your CPA charge you extra to file them? I was just curious why you file them through TaxAct if he does them for you anyway!

      • http://christinashaw.com Anonymous

You know, I’m not sure! When we started using him, he didn’t have internet (lives in the country), although I know he has since gotten access to internet, so I guess I need to ask him for next year!

  • Jennifer

We have done our taxes for over 10 years, but always procrastinated and waiting till the last min to file :( So last year, a friend recommended their CPA and we decided to try it out since things were a bit more complicated than the decade prior :0) We loved him!

We received a package from this year with a pre-assigned appt date/time (it was based on the time we had meet with them last year, but the date was early Feb) and a few forms to helps us get everything together that we needed. I put all the things into the envelope and wrote the date on the calendar. Even though I know we CAN do it ourselves, both my husband and I feel so much less stress by NOT doing it :D

Oh, and the CPA did catch a deduction we have missed before – so that was a nice plus … He cost around $100 and we always get a small refund that we plan for (we don’t like loaning the gov’t to much money :)

I love this post Jeff! So many people have such a low self esteem and just don’t realize what they have inside of them!
