Subscribing to Blogs in a Feed Reader

RSS feed reader

source: Dean Power

When I first started reading blogs, I was quickly overwhelmed with all the fabulous new sites I discovered. I started by adding them to my computer’s bookmarks so I could check back, but before I knew it my bookmarks were out of control. I needed a better way to keep track of the blogs I liked to read, so I turned to a feed reader.

What’s a feed reader?

I’m so glad you asked. A feed reader (also known as a feed aggregator or rss reader) is simply a way for you to collect all of the blogs you read into one place for easy viewing. It’s basically an online subscription. You can choose to receive your subscriptions via email, or you can go to your feed reader and view them there.

Cool. So how does it work?

A feed reader automatically checks each blog you follow for new content and pulls them into your feed reader so you can read from there. This saves you time and effort because when you sit down to peruse your favorite sites with your morning coffee, you don’t have to click around to each blog and check for new reading material.

NOTE: Some bloggers allow their entire posts to be displayed in the feed, so you can read the post in its entirety without even clicking over to the blog. Other bloggers allow only the first part of their post to be viewed in the reader; if you want to read the rest, you must click over.

A feed reader also helps you stay organized. You can arrange your subscriptions by category or importance. For instance, I have a folder with style blogs, one with foodie blogs, one with design blogs, and one with the blogs of my friends and family that I want to check daily. Some people who subscribe to a lot of blogs make a folder for each day of the week, and they divvy up their subscriptions so that they can hit each blog once a week. It’s entirely up to you.

So, what feed reader do you recommend?

Until very recently, there were basically two popular feed readers — Bloglines and Google Reader. I started out with Bloglines years ago and somewhere along the way, I switched to Google Reader. Unfortunately, Bloglines shut its doors on October 1 of this year, so that leaves you with Google. Why didn’t someone tell me to buy Google stock five years ago? Yes, there are other options, but I don’t have personal experience with any of them. It seems that almost everyone I know uses Google Reader.

It helps to set your browser’s preferences to default to the feed reader of your choice, then all you need to do is click on the subscribe button on the blog you’re interested in adding to your news feed.

Most blogs also offer the option to subscribe by email if you’d prefer that the posts come to you, but that can get overwhelming if you’re subscribed to a lot of blogs!

I have a blog. How can people subscribe to it?

Every blogger who wants regular readers should go to Feedburner (also owned by Google, surprise!) and claim your feed. Then go into the Publicize tab and follow the directions for placing a “chicklet” or a Feedburner graphic on your site. If you need more hand holding than that, then you’ll have to wait for my next post!

So, do you use a feed reader? Do you have anything to add?

I’m looking forward to the simple things of summer — evening walks, icecream cones, tending to my garden & playing in the sprinkler — as well as things like visiting museums, heading to the beach and taking my girls fishing for the first time!

Our overall schedule doesn’t change much, so we just need to add all of that to the calendar!

We won’t be having any vacations this summer as baby #3 is scheduled to make her debut at the end of July. However we have made activity plans. We plan on getting involved with our YMCA for swim classes and gymnastics for my pre-schoolers, plus going for family swim nights etc. We do have a sort of family planned trip to a local amusement park that has a lot of rides for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

But most of all, I’m looking forward to all the outside time in our yard. My kids LOVE to go outside so as long as it’s not to hot or raining, we’ll be outdoors playing!

You are so smart!! When I was preggo with our #3 (due in Aug) we took a trip to Universal Studios Orlando in July… geez, am I stupid or what?? I was hot, miserable, and had to pay full price even though I couldn’t ride anything and couldn’t even watch the 4-D movies!

LOL! We spent a day at Disney in August one year with a 2yo and 6mo, and it was probably the dumbest decision of my life. As much as I love Disney, it is NOT fun in the heat & humidity!

Oh, me too, Vanessa — I love being able to send the girls outside for hours at a time. There are no complaints of being bored or asking to watch TV. They just use their imagination, get dirty and have lots of fun!

I have actually for the FIRST time EVER schedule our summer vacay’s way ahead of time this year! We are usually a family that says on Wednesday “Let’s go on vacation Saturday!”. ha

We are going to the beaches of Lake Michigan twice and to a family apologetics conference in TN in July!

We are also planning on Dad and the boys taking a tent camping trip…however “the girl” and I will stay home for that one!

One goal I have is to get Tye, age 7, off his training wheels!

I actually have my “Summer 2010 Goals” listed on the side of my blog to help me remember!

I do have a few summer plans, but nothing major. :-) We are going to get a cabin in MS again this year. Other than that, it will just be lazy days at the beach or in our pool. :-) I stay-at-home and DH is a teacher, so summers are pretty crowded around here. :-)

By late march, I already begin to make plans for the kids’ summer camps and activities. Plans begin even earlier for teens, as many of the academic summer programs have a long application process and are usually due in February! This summer, I’m going to mix it up for the kids – I’m letting them choose 4 different 1 week summer programs/camps. This way, I’ll avoid hearing how bored they are by the second week.

I read this post in google reader! I suggest that bloggers subscribe to their own blog, at least for a while, to get an idea of what their posts look like through a feed reader. Sometimes formatting on a blog will look OK, but the feed reader will strip out some of that formatting and make it look weird. Keep an eye on your own feeds! Also, don’t think that people will never come to your blog again just because they can read it in a feed reader – I always stop by to comment on compelling posts!

That’s a great point! I do subscribe to my own blogs for those reasons.

THANK YOU for writing this! I can’t count the number of times that I’ve received a message from a reader who doesn’t know how to follow me without using google friend connect!!
I also want to point out another awesome feature of google reader, there is a button in the top left called ‘Add a subscription’ press this button and then add in ANY web address to follow new posts! I ‘follow’ so many non blog websites this way and don’t even bother looking for the feedburners any more, just because it’s easier to plop the address into google reader directly!

      Great tip, thanks!

At a bloggers conference 2 weeks ago, one of the more established bloggers syas she uses spacing and sizes of font to pace your reading, to make a point. All that would not show up in a reader. I believe she is one who has hers et that you have to go to the blog to read the full post, which would help people get the full effect. Just a thought!

Can you please tell me the difference in Google Friend Connect & RSS feeds? When I started blogging, I grew my readership mostly through GFC but after switching to WP, I lost a TON of followers because my feed no longer showed up in their reader. I’ve since encouraged readers to subscribe to my RSS feed ot through email. Just wodnering the difference & if there is a chance I can get my readers back.

    • Anonymous

HM. I don’t know much about GFC. It’s a Blogger thing, right?

  • http://thisblessedlife.net Jessica @ This Blessed Life

I’m sure this one of the most “duh” questions ever, but what to the numbers alongside a blog title mean in a reader??! I cannot for the life of me figure that out.

    • http://www.1wonderwomanwannabe.blogspot.com/ WonderWomanWannabe

Isn’t that how many people are subscribing?

      • http://thisblessedlife.net Jessica @ This Blessed Life

I don’t think it can be, because otherwise the numbers would be in the hundreds or thousands. These numbers are usually only double digits.

        • Anonymous

I think it’s the number of unread posts for each feed. They should go down
          when you read the posts…maybe?

    • Anonymous

It’s the number of posts you haven’t read.

  • http://www.1wonderwomanwannabe.blogspot.com/ WonderWomanWannabe

great tips! I’ll be sure to refer some of my newbie blogging friends to it!

  • Anonymous

Yes, unfortunately some formatting elements are lost on a feed reader. I have gone back and forth but have found that my readers prefer full feeds, so that’s what I’ve been doing for a long while now.

    • Anonymous

Yes, as a blog reader, I absolutely despise partial feeds because they defeat the purpose of subscribing in a feed reader, which is being able to get to all of the posts in one place. So I refuse to use them as a blogger because I know I dislike them personally!

  • http://www.bloggedissue.com Tara

I’d love to recommend a blog reader to you… it is still a work in progress – by my hubby – but I enjoy using it. It is set up to show links between commenters etc, and colours show the mood of the post. Lots of other exciting ideas possibly to be used in the future.

    • Anonymous

      Hi Tara!

What’s the link for the blog reader? Thanks so much for sharing!
